Paths of the desert I / II

Paths of the Desert I - The path to Djebel Grouz, Figuig / Morocco

About walking in the desert. Getting to know the landscape step by step. Initially hesitant, later naturally. Getting to know the landscape step by step. The horizon in viewing direction as orientation guide. A path gives confidence. A path has a goal, a history and a purpose. Unlocking the wilderness through a path. The appropriation of a path through its chronicle created with the means of landscape painters and surveyors.

Recordings on the geography of the northern Sahara and on walking in the desert.
Measurement by pacing and with help of markers (stone manikins) on a 4km long path, dissected into straights. Drawing of the path with regard to the path’s axis, goniometry of directional changes and details on soil conditions and tectonics.
Drawing of the horizon at every change of direction according to the new point of view.
Sounds recordings of steps.

Path of the Desert II - Nomad Crossing Figuig / Morocco

Narrow, almost invisible paths lead through the desert. Created by people and animals, from horizon to horizon. A network of life traces in the desert, left behind step by step. From yesterday, for tomorrow, for ever. A path is created while walking. Scanning the scenery with the systematics of a radar screen and a periscope.

Geographical recordings of an intersection of desert paths near the Figuig oasis.
Measurement by pegging out a circle with a 60m diameter, division in 72 sectors, recording every intercept point of the paths with sector radiuses.
Ground plan of the paths by connecting the intercept points.
Drawing the horizon in 12 sectors of 30 degrees each, as seen from the center of the circle.
